Sue Karlan, Senior Vice President, Surety

Sue Karlan is senior vice president of surety operations at ICW Group—a position she’s held since joining the company in 2009. Under her direction, ICW Group’s net loss ratio has repeatedly been one of the lowest in the surety industry. In 2018 and 2019, ICW Group had the best loss ratio in the industry with a -815.25 and -1595.81 respectively. Prior to ICW Group, Sue’s credentials include leadership positions at numerous Top Ten Surety Companies where she was responsible for overseeing the handling of surety claims involving prominent bankruptcies such as Enron, Bethlehem Steel and Abengoa.
Sue was also the driving force behind On Point Risk Solutions, an ICW Group sister company that provides claims administration, audit, operational and underwriting support services to the property, casualty and surety industries. Serving as senior vice president of surety and construction for On Point Risk Solutions, she’s worked with several start up surety operations and trained their personnel in numerous key areas, including establishment of a surety operation, creation of surety systems, organization of a surety claims department, as well as portfolio analysis.
Sue earned her juris doctor from Villanova University School of Law, and is a vice chair of the American Bar Association Surety & Fidelity Law committee, as well as the past president of the New England Surety Association. Holding law licenses in multiple jurisdictions among numerous state and federal courts, she often speaks at nationwide industry functions, sponsored by the American Bar Association, the National Association of Surety Bond Producers and Lorman’s Educational Services. Sue is an active member of the Surety & Fidelity Association of America, National Association of Independent Sureties, Surety Claims Institute, National Bond Claims Association, San Diego Surety Association and National Association of Surety Bond Producers.
